When to seek extra help

Speak to a doctor or qualified counsellor if grief is making daily life difficult. You do not need to wait a set length of time to ask for help.

  • If you have thoughts of ending your life, contact a crisis service above. If you are in immediate danger, call emergency services now.
  • Intense longing or preoccupation with the person is stopping you living day to day.
  • You're relying on alcohol, drugs or medication to cope.
  • You can't eat, sleep, work or care for yourself or others.
  • The death was traumatic and you have flashbacks or nightmares.

In England you can also self-refer to free NHS Talking Therapies without seeing your GP.
